New federally funded pain research points to what many TMJ patients suspect: generic treatment isn't working

NASHVILLE, TN – July 23, 2026 - A newly funded phase of National Institutes of Health research into chronic jaw pain is drawing attention to a gap many TMJ patients know firsthand: standard treatment often stops at rest and pain medication, without addressing what's actually happening inside the joint.
Hall Dental Studio, a South Nashville dental practice with more than 40 years in the community, is using the research as an opportunity to walk patients through what more targeted TMJ care can look like.

Federal Researchers Are Mapping the Biology Behind Jaw Pain
Investigators at UT Health San Antonio, part of a five-institution consortium backed by a $9 million NIH grant, are studying the specific nerve pathways responsible for TMJ and facial pain. Lead researcher Armen N. Akopian, PhD, has noted that pain in this area behaves differently depending on which tissue and nerve types are involved, which helps explain why blanket treatment approaches often underperform. The long-term goal of the research is a non-opioid treatment developed specifically for chronic jaw pain, rather than one borrowed from general pain management.
Pain that starts in the jaw rarely stays there.

How Hall Dental Studio Approaches TMJ Differently
Hall Dental Studio's lead dentist trained for more than three years under H. Clifton Simmons III, recognized as one of Tennessee's leading non-surgical TMJ specialists, and built that training into a full diagnostic and treatment model. Rather than defaulting to a single fix, the practice evaluates each case individually using:
Prolotherapy and PRP/PRF injections to support tissue-level healing
Laser therapy to reduce inflammation and target pain directly
3D CT scanning and digital bite analysis to identify the actual source of dysfunction
Custom-fitted occlusal guards for patients dealing with grinding-related joint strain
"Every patient who sits in our chair has a different story behind their jaw pain, and the research backs that up now more than ever," said Dr. Jon Mark Thompson, DDS, Owner and Lead Dentist of Hall Dental Studio. "We don't hand someone a mouth guard and call it done. We look at the joint, the bite, and the person, and build a plan around all three."
That's the difference between managing pain and actually resolving it.
